Space Invaders: Live from the Men's Bathroom

Date

20 July 2020 - 11 November 2020

As my major project in my first year of university I was involved in a recording project that aimed to use spaces to create natural reverbs in recorded music. My role in this project was as a recording and mixing engineer, involved in all aspects of getting sound from the source to a completed tracks in an EP.

The reason I think this project was so valuable to me as a recording and mixing engineer is that there imposed restrictions that we then had to work with in creating something professional. However, we weren't just looking to make professional sounding tracks, we were exploring the sonic qualities that these spaces offered us and working with them to incorporate into the dry recording done in the studio. a large part of what we were doing was re-recording the dry recordings of instruments and voice in the spaces to acquire color and natural spatial effects.

My personal favourite from the EP was a track in which we truly explored the sonic qualities of the men's bathroom. We took inspiration from Alvin Lucier and continually re-recorded the same piece of audio in the space until the original sonic elements were unrecognizable.

Throughout this project I gained recording and mixing skills which I think will be very valuable to me in my career as a technically minded musician.
